A user with map manager or map owner permissions can export a map in a JSON format. Through the APIs, it would also allow anyone to create an import from the standard JSON format into a tool or format of their choosing.
Go to the "Processes" page (Processes in left panel) - The "Export Maps" is accessed from the three dots in a vertical line (in right panel of the maps page), to the right of the red “soft delete map”. You will only see this option if you are a Map Manager or Owner.
The export is a basic structure. It exports a standard JSON format file of the map which we are using for transferring Elements maps into other formats (like MS Visio), so that you can take content into other formats or tools. Though not as useful or functionally rich as using it in Elements, it is a complete record of the content you are holding online with us, in a format you can edit and import into other applications in the future, should you ever want to.
Once the export is completed you will see the notification in the upper right corner of the screen. Click on the notification to download the file.
There is a basic utility which is open source for importing JSON format exports into Visio.
This utility requires the following:
- Windows 10
- Visio 2016
It has not been tested with previous versions of Windows and Visio and may not work with prior versions
Click on the button below to download the zip file that contains the Visio import utility.
Running an Import
To import an Element’s map into Visio perform the following steps
- Export a map from elements as zipped folder.
- Unzip the folder.
- Launch the Visio Importer.
- Set path to unzipped folder.
- Set path where Visio file will be saved.

Access to the Source Code
Elements provide access to the source code so if there is a requirement to enhance the import then this can be undertaken. Contact Elements support at email@example.com to access the source code.
