Article outline

Prerequisites

Logging in to the Elements Import app

Navigate to import.elements.cloud to open the application.

Select EU or US instance

Using the toggle, select whether your account uses the EU or US instance.

Note: If your app login link is app.q9elements.com then you are using EU, if you login to app.us.elements.cloud then you use US.

Enter your login credentials

Once you've ensured the correct instance is selected, enter your Elements login credentials (email and password) to log in.

Note that SSO login isn't currently supported.

Import Lucidchart diagrams

Lucidchart diagrams are imported into Elements using VDX or VSDX files of your diagram exported from Lucidchart.

  1. Export a VDX of your Lucidchart diagram. Note that this is a paid for feature in Lucid. It is possible to upload VSDX files but this may cause issues with flowline connections and images. Therefore it is highly recommended you export as VDX.

  2. Open import.elements.cloud.

  3. In the top left corner, click the space name and select the space you want to import your diagram into. The list should show all spaces you are a member of.

  4. Click the blue + icon to open the import window.

  5. Enter the diagram name and description.

  6. Choose "upn" as your diagram type.

  7. Optional: choose the theme you want the diagram to be created in. This field will display a list of all available themes in the selected space.

  8. Upload your exported VDX/VSDX file.

  9. Press "Create" when ready. You should see a green success message if the import is successful.

Once successfully imported you will see the diagram appear in the list onscreen. Note that this page shows you a list of all diagrams in the selected space that you have imported using this application. You will not see any other diagrams available to you in this space in Elements.

You can navigate to your newly imported diagram using the "Open in Elements" link. There is also the option to delete the diagram if you choose to.

Note: Elements uses a limited number of key entities in UPN diagrams. These are flowlines, activity boxes, sticky notes and text boxes.

If your Lucid diagram contains alternative shapes such as diamonds, we convert these to activity boxes for you. You may need to tidy up your imported diagram.

Import images of sticky notes

The diagram import also allows you to upload an image of sticky notes and convert it to a diagram of sticky notes in Elements.

Simply follow the same steps as above, but upload a .png or .jpeg of your sticky note image.

Example input image:

Example output:

The import may take longer as it uses Generative AI to convert the image into sticky notes (Gemini). Do not use this if you are uncertain about uploading your data for Generative AI use.

Additional information

All imported diagrams are created with the tag "Imported" so that you can filter and identify them in Elements.

Current limitations and known issues

  • If you use a password manager, sometimes login details for the Academy are pre-filled instead of Elements application details. Be aware of this if you are experiencing errors.

  • All imports generate a new diagram. It is not possible to import diagrams directly as drilldowns. Instead, you will need to import them as a new diagram, and then copy the imported version into the drilldown required.

  • Lucidchart imports will likely need some adjusting once they are imported as there aren't direct translations from many Lucidchart shapes to Elements shapes.

  • For sticky note imports you may experience an error. In this case, it is normally because Gemini is unable to handle the request right now. We recommend trying again later.

  • Lucidchart diagrams can be exported as image, VDX, or VSDX files. When using the tool the user should export their diagram as a VDX file. (diagram images won't work with the importer and VSDX files won't maintain connections between boxes and arrows)
